Scarlett Johansson Deserves A Huge Round of Applause
This is something you don’t see happening all the time…in fact, never.
Scarlett Johansson announced she would be playing a trans character, and then social media went wild with criticism. Apparently, Johansson thought it over and she decided to back out of the role and she gave this statement.
“In light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project,” Johansson said in a statement to Out magazine. “Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive.”
I think that deserves a huge round of applause. She “gets” it. And she’s honest about it. She understands why there was so much controversy and she understands why this entire topic goes a lot deeper than actors acting. Understanding is the most important aspect of this entire conversation.
You can read the rest here. I knew there would be some kind of an awakening eventually. There had to be. Now I hope it starts spilling over into book publishing, because no other industry with straight white privilege has culturally appropriated LGBT people more than book publishing has. Just because a straight white author can write fiction in a genre that’s focused on any marginalized group of people doesn’t mean they should be writing it.
Indonesian Gay Couple Flogged 80 Times In public
More disturbing news on the global front. It’s sad to see things like this still happening. But it shows how far we still have to go.
Here’s the rest. Flogging gay men for having gay sex has been an ongoing practice there.
Hackers Recording Nasty Things Through Your Web Cam
I’ve heard about this happening before.
Here’s more. Take the time to read the rest of this one. It’s worth it.
