Tina Fey’s Comments On Gay Men
I’ve been seeing this particular story all over social media this week and I wanted to post about it because I’ve been getting private messages about it.
Nothing makes Tina Few happier than to know that plenty of gay men still enjoy quoting her 2004 movie Mean Girls over brunch.
I’ve never seen Mean Girls and I have no intention of seeing it. I’m gay and have been all my life. I know a lot of gay men do enjoy that sort of entertainment and I think that’s wonderful for them and I support them completely. Many are friends and I love them. But not ALL gay men enjoy that kind of entertainment and I think that point needs to be taken into consideration now, too.
‘it definitely gave me a wider swath of humor styles. I grew up so much in theater, so the gay community has always been a natural part of who I feel like I’m playing to. When you’re writing jokes, you’re always thinking of your friends.’
It shows how limited Tina Fey’s scope (and “swath”) is when it comes to gay men. I can’t remember the exact quote and I don’t feel like looking for it right now, but Jonathan Groff said something wonderful after Looking was canceled when he stated that he learned fast just how “diverse gay men can be.” Unfortunately, Looking might have been canceled because it broke many of the stereotypes.
The biggest problem is that most gay men don’t have voices…yet. There are many reasons for that, but one of the main reasons is that so many gay men live quiet, subtle lives. Many are still in the closet. Some are married to women and they might never come out. Get this, some are even Republicans. Trust me on that. For every one gay man who cheers Tina Fey’s Mean Girls another one cringes.
I think I would be remiss if I didn’t mention this as well. To take a minority, any minority, and stereotype them the way Tina Fey has done is about as wrong as it gets. Try to imagine her doing this with any other minority.
Utah’s First Gay Woman Mayor
On a much more positive note, here’s a piece about the first gay woman elected mayor of a large city in the state of Utah. This is history being made right in front of us.
Tony’s brother and family live in Utah in a suburb right outside of Salt Lake City and I’ve been eager to get out there for a visit.
Rose McGowan Slams Caitlyn Jenner
You may or may not recall several posts I wrote about Rose McGowan slamming gay men for not supporting women enough. At the time, I didn’t like the way she lumped all gay men into one category and portrayed them all the same way…wearing speedos and riding Pride floats. More stereotypes. I’ve always been up front with my support for women, even when I don’t understand something completely they have my support. Most of the people I work with in publishing are women and I learn a great deal from them. And I thought McGowan was guilty of putting gay men into a tight little box because of her limited scope and her lack of understanding about gay men.
And now McGowan is going after Caitlyn Jenner as a trans woman, with her typical brand of vitriol.
I’ll admit that I don’t always understand Caitlyn Jenner as a woman. However, in her efforts to slam Caitlyn Jenner as coming from a place of privilege, McGowan is showing just how disingenuous she is. It’s true that Caitlyn Jenner will never know what it was like to grow up as a woman, but Rose McGowan will NEVER know what it was like to grow up as a closeted transgender person.
So once again, Rose McGowan is full of shit.
